Riding My Bike

You are one ride away from a good mood.” – Sarah Bentley, British cyclist

They say the best way to prevent aging is to not think about your age as a restriction. I’m 49 years old, soon to be 50, and every time I ride my bike, I feel like a little girl again, especially when Stella is riding shotgun in her basket.

As a little girl I had an accident on my bike. I guess it was pretty scary for my mom and my sister who thought I was “pretending to sleep” in the driveway. Really, I was unconscious. I don’t remember the accident very well. What I remember most was that I had to spend the night in a crib in the hospital and I was really pissed about it. I was a big girl and I didn’t sleep in a crib at home so why would I in the hospital? It also prevented me from going to my gymnastics meet which was a bummer. That accident never detered me from getting back on my bike. I’m grateful for that!

My dream was to have a beachcomber that I could scoot around running errands, seeing the world. However I never lived in neighborhoods where riding a bike was possible. Not until I moved to Alpharetta, Georgia!  I made sure the next place I decided to live would be a bike friendly community.

It was on my Live You Now journey when I reconnected with riding a bike. I tried a street bike, you know the one your shoes clipped into, but that wasn’t my jam. When I began my road trip someone suggested bringing a bike and it was the best suggested I received. And to my surprise, the blended the Beachcomber with a road bike!  I decided to bring a bike along with me and it was the best decision I made.

Stella loves riding too. My favorite part is seeing the smiles it puts on people’s faces.
