For The Love of Sewing

These are my mom’s hands sewing on the same machine she used over 50 years ago to make a lot of our childhood clothing, prom dresses and so much more. 50 years and she’s still sewing; an art she absolutely loves.

Sewing brought my mom and dad together. They were both born and raised in Italy but they didn’t meet until they came to America. My father was a foreman at a coat factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was looking for people who could sew a particular stitch on coats called the Top Stitch. According to my mom, it wasn’t hard to do but apparently you had to have a steady hand and be able to work on a pretty powerful sewing machine. My dad heard my mom was really good with handling a sewing machine so he went knocking on her door one day to ask her to come work for him. After convincing my grandfather, my mom began working at the factory.

Little did she know that her life with my dad began that day he came knocking on her door. They built a beautiful life together in America. My dad moved on to pursue the American dream and opened up a business of his own. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage, four daughters, and ten grandchildren.

Her hands are still steady and she continues to create beautiful pieces for all of us to enjoy. My mom’s dream is to teach her granddaughter Sophia to use this machine so she can pass it on to her. The art of sewing brought two people together. It’s so much more than a sewing machine.
